Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya informed BoxingScene.com that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) will now explore alternative options for a planned ring return on May 2 - because Miguel Cotto (39-4, 31KOs) and his team blew a Friday night deadline to accept Golden Boy's most recent offer - which appears to be Golden Boy's final offer.
"Canelo is obviously fighting on May 2nd, he's firm on that. The fight he wanted is Cotto, because that's a fan friendly fight and he wants it for the fans. All of our terms are dealt with. We agreed to everything. Canelo bent over backwards to try to make this fight. There is a deadline and that deadline has passed. Since now that they didn't take the offer, and a very handsome offer - we therefore - Canelo and Golden Boy - we're going to move on," De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com. "Canelo gave me a deadline of last night and that deadline passed."
When asked if Cotto's team come back in a few days to further discuss the terms, De La Hoya stayed firm on Canelo's position. The two sides have been negotiating for weeks.
"No, the deadline passed. [Cotto's team] will never see whatever he wanted. He will never see that number again. Canelo gave him everything they wanted. If we're going to make a future deal down the line, in the future this year or next year - I guarantee that its going to be on Canelo's terms," De La Hoya said.
Gaby Penagaricano, Cotto's adviser, confirmed the information to BoxingScene.com.
"We did not reach an agreement. Spoke to Oscar last night and he said that he needed to move on. We have no problem with that and respect it," Penagaricano said.
Regarding the 'Plan B' opponent, several options are currently being explored.
"We have to figure that out. Canelo is stuck on May 2nd. There are several options for him. We're going to sit down with HBO. We have some calls to place after we're finished talking and we are going to strategize," De La Hoya said.
