Lets take a trip down memory lane and go through the events that led to what has transpired today
Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin aka GGG the long time WBA Middleweight Champion was captivating the boxing world with his high level boxing skills, steel chin, unbelievable power, and a tenuous grasp of the English language. His fights were must sees as he plowed through and ko'ed one Middleweight contender after another while unfortunately being avoided by then lineal king Sergio Martinez.
The powers to be recognized this and had big plans to turn into one of boxing's biggest superstars and draws.
Gennady, or GGG as he preferred to be called, announced his intention to unify all 4 Middleweight titles. A feat that has only been accomplished by fellow GOAT middleweight Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins a decade before with Jermain Taylor being the last man to hold all 4 before the titles splintered for various reasons.
David Lemieux, who had just won the IBF Middleweight title in a FOTY candidate against Hassan N'dam, stepped up to the plate. Although a man of questionable boxing skill and discipline, he nonetheless possessed the heart of a lion along with pure stones in his fists. He would have done well to not face GGG and take a couple soft touches to milk his title. however that is not how a champion acts in his words. He wanted the baddest motherfukker in the division because that is what champions do. Lemieux would go on to job his title in good effort to GGG but did not lose face. He has been a staple of HBO cards since making good money and getting some wins here and there. That is what happens when you do business the right way.
Andy Lee, then WBO Middleweight Champion, was down for a unification bout with GGG once he got by his then mandatory, Billy Joe Saunders. Unfortunately Lee was not able to hold on to his title as he was dropped and outboxed by the slick Saunders. The story of Saunders is a whole another chapter but not related to Canelo's personal failing so I will end it here.
Enter Miguel Cotto..Cotto was the reigning WBC and lineal Middleweight Champion. He was the man who eventually ended the reign of Sergio Martinez. Upon winning the title he went on a unprecedented diva phase (along with ridiculous catchweight demands) that angered many boxing fans. GGG naturally wanted to fight him but Cotto would keep juelzing around the reasonable request with more nonsense. GGG then made himself the mandatory to Cotto's title by beating Marco Antonio Rubio, who held the WBC interim Middleweight belt. Cotto would go on to sign a fight...a fight with one Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The WBC mandated though that the winner of that fight would have to face GGG next. So what does Cotto do? Gives up the belt prior to the fight so he could avoid fulfilling the commitment. Cotto would end up losing the fight and his lineal claim to the Middleweight title. This was not good business even for a veteran like Cotto. Going against the wishes of the powers to be would prove to be detrimental to the aging Cotto in the end. Got put through the proverbial wringer in his final 2 career fights ending with a clear and karmic loss to Sadam Ali, who gave him a sound beating for his insolence. The chickens came home to roost
Enter Saul Canelo Alvarez..young Canelo was seen at the time as a fighter who would have no trouble meeting the challenge of GGG. But once he got the title something changed. Changed for the worse. All of a sudden Canelo would proclaim that he was not a middleweight
. A non middleweight who happened to hold the WBC/Lineal Middleweight titles. Alarming behavior..possibly fueled by binges of the drug cocaine with his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. Even more ridiculous was trying to enforce the same 155 catchweight demands as his predecessor on GGG.
This action would produce 2 casualties of war: Amir Khan, glass chinned Paki and #GMB alumnus, stepped up to face Canelo and got put to sleep after boxing Canelo's head off most of the fight. Some say that he may still be sleeping to this day
. The other casualty was from Ezekiel "Kell" Brook, conqueror of Shawn Porter and then reigning, undefeated, and underappreciated IBF Welterweight champion. He would make a leap to attempt to latest welterweight champion to become middleweight champion. GGG, frustrated and angered, ended up shattering poor Kell's face after a slow start within 5 rounds in a uncharacteristically brutal display of power that shocked even hardened boxing vets, media, and fans alike. Canelo was no different and he too would end up giving up his WBC Middleweight title after a mandate by the WBC. 2 middleweight champions giving up their belts so they don't have to face GGG. Very unprecedented.
GGG would then subsequently be upgraded to full WBC Middleweight champion of the world.
Canelo would have a bunch of nonsensical fights afterwards. Going back to 154 for one fight and then facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at 165 catchweight. Meanwhile GGG would face Danny Jacobs, a top MW contender, in a high level competitive chess match of a fight winning a close 12 round decision. His first 12 round decision and first fight to go the distance in 8 plus years. The stock of Canelo Alvarez was lower than Bitcoin's prior to the last 6 months from today so Oscar had no choice but to make the fight. Oscar, in a possible cocaine addled mindstate, reasoned that GGG shown enough slippage to warrant the risk.
The fight - Most observers thought that GGG won the fight clear with educated jab and constant pressure. Pressure that gassed out young Canelo, a man of struggle stamina, in only 3 rounds and have him circling the ring like Lara. Very poor stamina indeed
. However the judges scores would tell a different story. A different story of corruption
. One judge had it a draw (bad card). The other judge had a 115-113 win for GGG (too close). One judge with her Mr.Magoo glasses scored the fight for Canelo..118-110...This is bad business. Canelo was scheduled to job his lineal claim to GGG but again went off script. The powers to be had no choice but to make an example. Which brings us to how Canelo failed his drug test. A rich fighter like him should have no problem securing the finest, purest, non sullied meats around. The pure arrogance in mentioning "tainted beef" only compounded the lies. Its clear the power and pressure got to Canelo and he needed an edge. Couldnt gas out 2 fights in a row. Instead of working hard he tried to take a shortcut while the Honorable GGG trained hard like the champion he is.
Karma is very real. The world must stay balanced and shyt. For Saul Canelo Alvarez this is only the beginning.
