According to industry sources, former champion Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22KOs) - and not James Kirkland - is currently the frontrunner to face Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) on a televised date in December.

Canelo's team have confirmed that Clottey, who dominated Anthony Mundine in April, is one of the leading contenders.

Clottey's promoter, Joe DeGuardia, told BoxingScene.com that he's had discussions with Golden Boy Promotions regarding a fall fight with Canelo.

"We've had talks. I think it's a great fight and I hope it happens," DeGuardia told BoxingScene.com.

The big question, in the industry, is whether or not HBO will secure Canelo's next return. The Mexican star's last five fights were carried by Showtime, but multiple sources indicate that HBO is absolutely in the running for the December fight.

If Clottey had gotten at least one recent win over a high profile opponent on Sho/Hbo to make himself more relevant, than I'd have no problem with this fight.

Kicking Mundine's ass all over the ring just ain't enough.

Let Clottey get one of the Charlo twins or fight Andrade before he gets another payday.

I think Canelo/Clottey would be a decent scrap though. Canelo ain't gonna throw 1200 punches so we don't have to worry about Joshua getting gun shy. Both throw sharp accurate punches too so we'd get some decent exchanges. It's just that this fight doesn't make more sense than a Kirkland bout to me.

i concur..clottey does have it in him to make a difficult night..depending on which one shows up..but thats not PPV status though
Not at all, but I kinda feel Canelo's camp though. On one hand dude has almost 50 fights and shouldn't be in need of any medium level matches, but he's still super young and obviously learning, and this is good match for him. I think it's kinda on Sho that they'd make this a PPV fight. I don't think it hurts Canelo at all to have a tough fight/landslide on regular Sho to build back up to a PPV fight against a name in May. The TV companies got the game screwy right now.
