Baseball is historically a stat nerd sport.

The nerd stats only came in to play in the last decade previous to that they were still evaluating players based on batting average and RBIs...

Stats are more accepted in baseball because it has been a prominent part of the game for longer.
Branch Rickey was hired statisticians for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s.
When Bill James was creating his runs created metrics, I believe he was doing that in the 1980s. And most casual fans still don't even consider that today.
The movie (and book) Moneyball shows clearly that scouts and older baseball people aren't big fans of the newer metrics, even if that's just a popular example.

It's almost certain that basketball had a similar stats revolution to the one baseball has had.
When NBA teams were trying to sign or re-sign players, there had to be some people that realized a simple eye test was inefficient and flawed. And relying on PPG/APG/RPG didn't always tell you much.

It's possible (probable, even) that the leap in analytics that baseball took in the early 2000s helped push the NBA's growth in developing their own analytics.
But at the end of the day, this all tries to do the same thing -- win games.

I think it was a couple of weeks ago on Inside he admitted he’s not watching NBA basketball to focus on the tournament
