Because I`m now seeing South Asians use it when at least "here" it was used for Latinos who are Non Black and Non white.

So should South Asians now be grouped with said Latinos? Is it the catch all for people who are not of [majority] African, European, or East Asian ancestry? This is also excluding "indigenous" people of the Americas too.

I've seen brown South Asian people. Rapper M.I.A has a song called Boom ADD referring to herself as brown girl.

Different cultures see race and color different. What color do you want them to claim?

I`m not asking them to claim anything. I am asking in the context of the USA if two "groups" of people are claiming something, are they now one group or does the term need to be reexamined.

In Toronto it has always meant South Asian and sometimes even Arab

I'm asking from a USA context. I've honestly never heard an Arab refer to themselves as Brown nor ever see a joint identify with South Asians. The Exception to that rule would be religious grouping via Islam, but in that situation the identifier is simply being Muslim.

Ask the people who see people as brown instead of those who are marginalized by it.

It happens here in the USA as well (Canada also follows many US cultural traditions).

I've seen and heard South Asians here in the US calls themselves "brown". It's usually the ones who were born and/or raised here that refer to themselves as such.

I feel this is a fairly recent thing though which is why I made the thread. "Back in my Day". I never really saw South Asians refer to themselves in a collective identity like SE Asians and East Asians. From my experience South Asians tend to get spoken of as "other than" thus they use their nationality/ancestry identifier while SE and East Asians got the "Asian"title. I know in the UK all Asians get grouped under the banner Asian, but I`m just more so speaking from a USA context/my experience

I feel you. I don't see a problem fam. Especially if it's just a colloquial label. I haven't seen brown on any job applications or US census.

If it becomes confusing I guess latinos could op for the Spanish word for brown.
