Instead think about him doing this instead: He flies up into space near the sun, the sun powers him up like mad and he just uses his laser vision from up there.

I'm confused here and not a comic book stan. If anything, is Superman not even being done justice at all lately. If you are to go by Superman's history of feats I think DC are the one's backing off because of the success and counter-culture nature of Batman. This Batman supremacy bullshyt didn't start until the popularity of the movies in the 90s. Superman has moved time, he has lived for hundreds of years. He has brought people back from death, gained some 5th dimensional power, broke through the source's wall. Its arguable that Superman is only topped by the Source and maybe the Imps? Instead everyone these days wants to make him a dumb brute that at one time in his life lost a fight to a bigger, older being. Superman is being made to look weak and dumb in favor of Batman and that's the truth.
