Was listening to Van Latham and he was discussing that these white liberals only recognize Black films that center on race. I.e. Green Book. But a movie like Mo Better Blues which is Black film but not center on racism, won't win. Do you ever think that will change?

I think progress is being made. American Fiction has elements speaking on racism but it isn't some heavy slave/segregation/civil rights piece. That's a big deal. I think nowadays you have to hint at that stuff but can have a more sophisticated story. They are giving us that room nowadays.

I feel we have to do a better job of making films that are unique and interesting. There’s no reason why we haven’t made our own Inglorious Basterds, our own The Royal Tenenbaums, our own Memento, our own Inception.

Another part is getting access to great writers to help tell these stories.
