If there was a law outlawing illegal immigrant and citizen marriages, would there be the same kind of push back from negros as there is on this gay marriage thing? Of course not, it's obviously because black people don't support gay marriage but they don't want to feel hypocritical about it, so they pretend to be offended when people make the obvious comparison.
Number one, that is an improper comparison. I know you thought it was good, but it's not. For one, the issue of ignorance is certainly there. But as of right now, the support for same-sex marriage among the African-American community is above or at the same level as the national average. So there is some ignorance involved and some even for religious reasons, but that's not the entire story. I have no idea why you feel comfortable extrapolating based on nothing but your subjective opinion. The fact of the matter is that when those some polls are conducted and one literally EQUATES the two then the support drops. Most people recognize it is not the same thing, but gay rights advocates consistently tried to entirely equate what African-
Americans suffered to what gay rights advocates suffer under one umbrella of "civil rights." Which is true in a sense, and which is why I think people of color should be particularly aware of such things. However, what they struggled to and continue to struggle through today are the not the same. One also deals with economic suppression (gay rights implicates this as well to a lesser degree), AAs just find the direct comparison disrespectful. Many scholars do as well (of all races and backgrounds) and consistently critique their colleagues who make the direct comparison. AAs take it as making light of their plight, particularly when people say that this is the civil rights issue of the 21st century as if the 20th century civil rights issues were resolved. So while I am in support of all same-sex rights because I couldn't give a shyt, I won't pretend that the two issues are the same OR that the LGBT community is entirely aligned with the AA community in regards to many of the issues that still plague them...because they aren't.
