By the mid-1970s, Black middle-class families were moving into the all-white hoods. Tensions rose!

The irony :manny:Now Blacks is crying about how Harlem is getting gentrified & overrun by cacs

When cacs gentrify....it artificially raises rents and displaces long time residents

When blacs moved to white hoods, they didnt price out cacs. Cacs just left bc they dont wanna live around blac folk bc tgey think theyre superior

Theres a big difference

And you'll rarely see Black people using racial slurs, throwing rocks at white kids, & being abusive because our neighborhoods are being "invaded". I doubt that poster is Black bro

Also northern Blacks who been in North for a while always looked down on Country Blacks:mjpls:
Those blacks invading Queens were middle class successful blacks who didn’t want to live in Harlem.

Did you see Harlem in the 70s? What well prosperous person would want their well to do family exposed to that?

Italians think that the American Dream only involves them. The blacks in Harlem are more American than them by a long shot.

Valley Stream has a lot of black people thanks to the Caribbean folks adding to the migration of going to Queens/Long Island.

There's an undercurrent in this thread I'd like to address, but I'm not sure how to approach it, so I'ma just tell a story.

I was chatting with a guy one time, black professional, 30's, at a spot in Harlem. He was talking about how he had to leave early- ish cuz he had a long way to get home. I asked him where he stay and this nikka said Howard Beach. :picard:

So all the black people, mostly AA's, were like, ":dwillhuh: :merchant: :damn:" aka, "What tf is your black ass doing out there???!??"

Come to find out, this nikka was not AA. He was some kinda black latino or Caribbean. Hence his response, which was basically some ':smugdraper:It's cool, I'm good.'

I say all that to say, 1. black foreigners in NY often try to slide in under 'blackness', so you don't know they foreign when they speaking authoritatively on race. Earlier, this same nikka gad been telling us how racism ain't that bad. :aicmon:

2. These same ones OFTEN, but not always, be the same ones taking little slick shots at my southern kin. I check them irl quite regular. But on the coli, it's unclear, so it appears as though "northern nikkas" is shytting on yall when, in reality, that ain't 'US'. :usure:

3. Note that the neighborhood we're talking about in this thread is now apparently mostly Caribbean and foreign black. Because ADOS, even when they had it, preferred to remain in our traditional neighborhoods, Harlem and parts of Bk. I know many, many AA's who stayed during the bad times.

That's it. No shade to nobody, just wanted to clarify some things.

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.
Howard Beach is definitely a no go zone for black folks... Alot of shyt went down back then and it's still til this day...:mjpls:

I get the :usureboutthatbreh:anytime someone mentions howard beach considering their history of cacs out there they have killed people out there... fukking sundown town for real..

Some black folks have moved to lindenwood which is a subset of Howard Beach. The Co-op buildings.

But I see black people working on Cross Bay Blvd these days.

Saw a black saxophonist playing his music at the Starbucks.

I still wouldn’t live there but it has calmed down a lot with the racial physical stuff.

I’ve personally never met a caribbean, African or AA say they are moving to Howard beach or Hamilton Beach.

Lindenwood above the Belt (by Ozone Park) has a few indo Guyanese and Black folks living in the co-ops.

My mom would have asked man what the hell is he doing in Howard Beach also.

My dad worked in Benonshurst only because he is gullible. His reasoning is that he is a follower of Christ so no racist can attack him as long as Jesus is shielding him. Lol

I don't know if he was plugged into the community like that. He seemed like he was from another city and just moved on out there without talking to nobody. :mjlol:

It’s not irony because blacks are asking why didn’t they fix Harlem back in the 60s to 80s.

Middle class is achieving the American Dream. You couldn’t achieve the American Dream in Harlem that was averaging over 100 murders a year during those times and literally a wasteland.

I wonder how life was for blacks who lived in the Malboro Housing projects in Gravesend/Benonshurst?

There was a story during those times of a train operator who worked the train yards and he was killed by racist not too far from there.

My mother grew up in SE queens in the early 60's. Her Hs in cambria heights, looking at her yearbook, was about 65% white, and a lot of Jews. Wasnt until a few years ago that I found out that there is a whole jewish cemetery over in Springfield Gardens.

I got cousins who grew up in Sheepshead Bay. They Haitian but look hispanic.

Never heard much stories about that way but sheepshead Bay is next to a racist unknown hood named Gerritsen Beach.

Irish people.
