you started an interesting debate in here, i had to hit up my cousin who grew up on 90s rap (born in 81) and put me on a lotta shyt and see what he thinks.

he's the one who pointed out to me MJG was the star of Ball & G, i never really saw it like that, but when I started listening more closely the past few years, I'm like damn he's right. and to @CHICAGO point just because you're lyrical that doesn't make you're not the sidekick, but in Ball & G case I don't think that's true

kinda related: I gotta sit down and read that Julia Beverly bio on Pimp C. I never finished it lol

Nah 8Ball was always the star. "Mr. Big" alone solidified him and is their most iconic song.

He also had the look and got all the solo features. That's always been the real life perspective.

i'm from texas so i can't speak on Ball and G like that, but to me (in UGK) Pimp was the extremely talented and flashy sidekick to a guy like Bun who could rap just as good but was more in tune with the business of the game. that's how it looked optically from Dallas

Thats a slick ass way of trying to drive a wedge by saying Bun was a side kick by Jive.. Probably led to some of the later tension between him and Pimp

WHY WOULD THEIR BE TENSION
WHEN BUN HIMSELF KNEW
THE DYNAMICS?

"I knew Pimp was the star, right, I knew Pimp was the heart of it, but I was doing some good sh*t too!”

Pimp knew how the labels were dividing artists while sitting in their offices eating Bagels and Cream Cheese....

That Knockin Doors Down video was powerful. Too bad that Pimp was out here beefing with Jeezy and Lil Troy and using that Ozone mag to air out laundry.

Lil Troy had a good point when he brought up how Julia was being messey

Death/Jail clauses in Hip Hop contracts really shows you how racist these labels are, and what they really think about these artists.

Jive has always been on this kinda sh*t, but I can guarantee that you don’t see terms like this in other genres' paperwork.

:ohhh:Oh shyt

That reminds me of Bun saying him and pimp walk past KRS 1 in the hallway and KRS1 ask them you signing with Jive and they said yeah and KRS said good luck with that

You really can’t name a decent artist that was on JIVE that didn’t have issues with them. UGK,KRS,The clipse,Too Short are all legendary acts but had to go through the same bullshyt there.

What i dont get with that clause ..
If they felt Bun was the sidekick what would replacing Pimp do? it would have been a sidekick and a lesser sidekick.

Above the fray.
Jive had EXCELLENT talent scouts when you think of the acts they signed in that era (ATCQ, HIERO, UGK, and others). But they were very shytty in terms of A&R and promotion.

J. Prince was the only other label boss that I've heard of who had rotating members/replacements in a rap group on some Menudo shyt. I'm guessing Jive got the idea from how he assembled the Geto Boys.

My man put me up on acts from different regions. Well balanced duos are good because they appeal to different types of fans. Bumped UGK because of Bun, was a big fan of 8Ball of 8&MJG
