“The most f*cked up thing about the UGK contract was there was a death/jail clause in my contract,” he began. “Which stated that if one of us died or if one of us went to jail, that we can replace that member, but at a lower percentage rate. And I was actually asked if I wanted to exercise this clause when Pimp C went to jail.”

He added, “This was in the original contract I signed in 1992. A death clause — and I can replace my dead friend but at a lower rate. So yeah, that was the kind of thing — and obviously, we had a f*cked up recoupment and all of that. There were amendments in the contract that we signed in 1992, that we didn’t fully fix until Pimp came home from prison in like, 2005.”

Bun B then spoke further about the clause, elaborating on his decision to decline it in order to pursue a solo album.

“When I told them I wanted to do the solo album, they brought up the clause, first,” he said. “I said no, I didn’t want to exercise that clause. And then they said, ‘Well, we’re not interested in the Bun B album, you’re the sidekick.’ And it was only so much I could argue it. I knew Pimp was the star, right, I knew Pimp was the heart of it, but I was doing some good sh*t too!”

Nevertheless, Bun B ultimately reached an agreement with Rap-A-Lot and released his individual project through the label overseen by J. Prince.

Weird but I’ve never seen Bun B as the sidekick. He was actually one of the few southern rappers that NY considered lyrical. I thought UGK complimented each other perfectly.

When they dropped Tell Me Something Good way back when, Chad was definitely THE STAR.

Bun was the Phife to Pimp C's Q-Tip until his verse on Murder. And then they sort of even'd up, imo. More Tek and Steele, Lil Fame and Billy Danze. Though some would say it was still a Dre/Big Boi situation.

I really liked his verse on Cocaine in the Back of the Ride and Fedz in Town, but nobody at 'Maica, 'Maica was hoping for a solo from Bun. They had a hard enough time being from Port Arthur if you really want to speak on it.

JUST BECAUSE YOURE THE MORE
"LYRICAL" ONE DOESNT MEAN
YOURE NOT THE SIDEKICK.

PIMP HAD ALL THE CHARISMA
WHICH MADE HIM THE STAR.

Pimp was always the star, Pimp could've did UGK without Bun. Bun became a beast but even he would say that Chad was the star of the group

Like he said Jive never fukked with Bun like that they were all over Pimp though.

Me personally I would've killed for a Bun solo album during that stretch between Ridin Dirty and Dirty Money but Jive was always on bullshyt

It seems like this has to be explained all the time to some people.

Bun is most definitely an elite rapper, but Pimp was The Flavor of the group.
He was the sound, the attitude, and the spirit of what the group stood for.

Kurupt is in my personal Top 20, but Daz is Tha Dogg Pound.
When they used to do interviews and such, Daz was the talker and Kurupt used to just sit there.
(Used to. Lol) Daz solos still sound like DPG albums, Kurupt solos sound like they just put a beat on
and pick up where he left off.

R.I.P. to Magoo (PBUH)…however you felt about his voice, he rapped better than Timbaland.
But Timbaland and them beats was the main draw.

This. I always looked at Pimp as the sidekick because Bun seemed like the levelheaded one

Bun had to mature a bit so UGK could remain alive...

It worked out well since by the mid 2000s, NY wasnt at the top of the Hip Hop game.

Pimp and Bun became heroes in their right. I remember Killa Kyleon saying on that Bun B Gangsta Grillz tape from 2004-2005 that him and Pimp were their Kool G Rap, Run DMC.

you started an interesting debate in here, i had to hit up my cousin who grew up on 90s rap (born in 81) and put me on a lotta shyt and see what he thinks.

he's the one who pointed out to me MJG was the star of Ball & G, i never really saw it like that, but when I started listening more closely the past few years, I'm like damn he's right. and to @CHICAGO point just because you're lyrical that doesn't make you're not the sidekick, but in Ball & G case I don't think that's true

kinda related: I gotta sit down and read that Julia Beverly bio on Pimp C. I never finished it lol
