The Buhari Gov't is both Evil and Clueless

Why Buhari is silent on Southern Kaduna killings - Spokesperson - Premium Times Nigeria
President Muhammadu Buhari is silent on the ongoing violence in southern part of Kaduna State because the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is handling it, presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, has said.

Mr. Adesina stated this Monday morning on Channels Television during its Sunrise Daily programme.

At least six persons were killed in Goska village, Jema’a local Government Area in the early hours of Christmas.

The victims included a teenage secondary school student, Gimbia Morik, daughter of a former council chairman in Jema’a.

The killings, by suspected herdsmen, occurred despite Jema’a and two other local governments – Kaura and Zango Kataf – being under a 24-hour curfew.

The state government after a meeting of heads of various security agencies in the state, had on December 21 imposed the 24-hour curfew to prevent violence during the festive season.

Scores of people have been killed in ethno-religious violence in Southern Kaduna in 2016.

As the killings continue, Mr. Buhari had come under criticism from Nigerians for his silence.

Citing Nigeria’s federal structure, Mr. Adesina said there was no need for Mr. Buhari to speak since Mr. El-Rufai is “on top of the matter.”

The presidential aide said as the chief security officer of his state, it rests on Mr. El-Rufai, who has pledged to bring perpetrators to book, to deal with the matter.
“You don’t have to hear from the president on that matter. When it pays us, we talk about federalism and true federalism; yet you want the president and presidency to talk about everything,” Mr. Adesina said.

He also said “when a thing like this happens in a state, there is a chief security officer and he is supposed to be on top of the matter.

“Governor El-Rufai Rufai was at the villa on Thursday to brief the president, so why should the president then be talking about it?

“True federalism is the governor should be in charge and he is in charge of it,” he said.

LOCAL MATTER

The killings in Southern Kaduna are suspected to be due to violence between the locals and migrating Fulani herdsmen.

Apart from Kaduna, similar violence between locals, mainly farmers, and migrating herdsmen has caused the death of hundreds of people in several other states including Benue and Taraba.

Mr. Adesina on Monday said local authorities must play a crucial role in stopping the violence.

He said state and local governments have a major role to play in dealing with herdsmen crisis.

He said Mr. Buhari is always in constant touch with governors whenever an attack occurs to get timely updates.

The spokesperson said Mr. Buhari has consistently maintained that the best way to stop the killings is through collaboration between the states and the grassroots leaders in local governments.

“The federal government has roles to play but not as much as the state and local governments,” he said.

The Gambia: Buhari, other West African leaders in closed door meeting
The Gambia: Buhari, other West African leaders in closed door meeting - Premium Times Nigeria
Some West African leaders including President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Abuja met behind closed door to discuss the political impasse in The Gambia.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Presidents of Liberia and Senegal, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Macky Sall as well as ex-Ghanaian President John Mahama are attending the meeting.

The representative of the United Nations to West Africa and The Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas is also attending the meeting while the Vice –President of Sierra Leone was still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.

The meeting, which is being held at the new Presidential Banquet, Aso Villa, followed the one in Accra on the sidelines of the inauguration of President Nana Akufo-Addo, on Saturday.

The meeting of the West African leaders is aimed at avoiding violence and preserving democracy in The Gambia.

Nigerian Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, said the Abuja talks would discuss further steps to be taken.

“There are some disturbing information the (Nigerian) president (Muhammadu Buhari) is hearing which he needs to verify and the Abuja meeting will take a final decision,” he said, without elaborating.

The West African leaders at the Accra meeting expressed the readiness of the region to continue the pursuit of dialogue with the leaders of The Gambia.

At the last ECOWAS meeting in Abuja, President Buhari and the former President of Ghana, John Mahama, were appointed as Mediator and Co-Mediator to resolve the political impasse.

They have also been mandated by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ensure the safety of the President-elect, Adama Barrow and ensure a peaceful handover of power on January 19.

After the meeting in Accra, Liberia’s President Ellen Sirleaf said the regional bloc had no intention to deploy its standby military force in Gambia

“We are committed to a peaceful mediation and a peaceful transfer of power in the Gambia … we will continue to pursue that for now,” Ms. Sirleaf, who chairs the 15-member body, said.

Asked if the regional group would deploy a standby force soon, she said “no”, adding that ECOWAS was closely monitoring proceedings in Gambia’s Supreme Court where President Yahya Jammeh is challenging the poll result.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the top U.N. official in West Africa, also attended the closed-door meeting, which was the first official engagement by Ghana’s new President Nana Akufo-Addo, who was sworn in on Saturday.

Diplomats are concerned about the impasse over the poll.

The United States warned its citizens on Saturday against visiting Gambia, whose white beaches are a draw for tourists.

“The U.S. Department of State warns U.S. citizens against travel to The Gambia because of the potential for civil unrest and violence in the near future,” the statement said.

Mr. Jammeh, a former coup leader, who has ruled Gambia for 22 years, initially accepted his defeat by opposition figure Adama Barrow in the December 1 election.

But a week later, he reversed his position, vowing to hang on to power despite a wave of regional and international condemnation.

BREAKING: Police raid PREMIUM TIMES head office; arrest publisher, journalist - Premium Times Nigeria
The Nigeria police have raided PREMIUM TIMES head office in Abuja, and arrested the newspaper’s publisher.

The publisher, Dapo Olorunyomi, was arrested alongside the paper’s judiciary correspondent, Evelyn Okakwu.

Plain-clothed officers conducted search at the office shortly after 5p.m. Thursday, and said they were acting on a complaint filed by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.

The arrests came days after PREMIUM TIMES turned down the army’s demand to retract news stories about the Nigerian Army and its operations.

The paper’s Editor-in-Chief, Musikilu Mojeed, condemned the raid.

“They should stop deluding themselves that they can muzzle the press and intimidate PREMIUM TIMES,” said Mr. Mojeed. “They should know that our loyalty lies with our readers and the Nigerian people who have a right to know.”

He said the paper will continue “to discharge its responsibilities in line with global best practices, social responsibility and patriotism, even at great risk to our personal liberties”.

More details later…

- The church faulted the action of the President Buhari, saying he has not arrested his kinsmen that are killing Nigerians in Southern Kaduna but attempt arresting an harmless man of God

The Omega Fire Ministries has responded to the attempted arrest of the church’s General Overseer, Apostle Johnson Suleiman in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, on Wednesday morning, January 25, 2017.

The church’s media director, Dr. Sule Emmanuel and the coordinator of the church’s legal team, Samuel Amune, in a jointly signed statement, said Apostle Suleiman is safe and the attempted arrest that was ordered from Abuja was unsuccessful.

President Muhammadu Buhari

The duo, who described President Muhammadu’s government as tyrannical, said Buhari ordered two truckloads of fully armed DSS officials to forcefully arrest a man of God, but the people and government of Ekiti state overwhelmingly resisted the arrest of Suleiman.

The statement read in part: “Let it be on record that this assault occurred around 1am in the morning of Wednesday. Apostle Johnson Suleman is not facing any corruption charge neither is there any petition against him. The attempted arrest being masterminded by the presidency against him is unconstitutional, morally wrong and procedurally defective.

“This country was founded on the principles of equality before the law and justice. There should be strict adherence to the spirit and letters of our constitution and nobody should be treated as a common criminal. As the country belongs to every one of us irrespective of religion and social status.

“By the way, the man of God in his prophecies for the year 2017 which he issued before the end of 2016 had already informed the public how God showed him that in 2017 the government of President Buhari will come after him because of his stand against the policies and actions of the government. But God is ever faithful to protect his anointed from the oppressors.”

The statement said no responsible government in the world ever makes religious leaders their object of attack, noting that rather than attack them, they rally round them to see how to forestall crisis and foster unity.

The church, which faulted the silence of the presidency over the killings across the nation with specific reference to the killings in Southern Kaduna, wondered why anyone has not arrested the perpetrators of these crimes, even as it blamed the senseless killings on Buhari’s kinsmen.

The church said the outspokenness of Suleiman was due to his love for Nigeria, maintaining that he cannot be quiet in the face of the immoral happenings in the nation.

The statement added: “Only recently, God’s servant, Apostle Johnson Suleman, was forced to call on Christians all over Nigeria to defend themselves against these killers since the spate of killings has been on the rise.

“Interestingly, the call by the man of God for the Christians to take caution and defend themselves where necessary has become the core focus of the Nigerian government, despite the fact that it has evidently failed to protect her people. It is now determined to exploit the instruments of the state to go after the man of God.”

The church called on the Nigerian government to put a stop to the senseless attacks on Christian leaders, saying: “These are leaders and beacons of hope whose integrity and teachings have kept this country in unity and consistently given hope to millions of Nigerians faced with hunger, neglect, abuse and ill-treatment from the government they optimistically voted into power.

It added that the church has branches in over 51 countries in the world and that the churches in the nations have been directed to send the protest letter to the Nigerian embassies in those countries, enumerating the inhuman treatment and the harassment of Nigerian church leaders by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

We like to unequivocally state that Apostle Johnson Suleman believes in the progress and unity of Nigeria, and this will remain the core of all his messages. However, no intimidation from the government will stop him from speaking the truth to the government, and standing in defense of the defenseless.

“We believe that the greater and brighter days of this country are very close-by, and God in His judgment will surely displace the enemies of his people, regardless of how highly placed they are.

“Apostle Johnson Suleman will continue praying for the good of Nigeria, and for the Almighty God to guide her leaders’ right,” the statement noted.
