With the exception of maybe the Caleb Downs situation, nothing is on the minds of Ohio State recruiting followers more right now than the pursuit of five-star defensive ends Damon Wilson and Keon Keeley.
Both kids look to be closing in on a decision in the coming weeks, if not sooner than that, and were recently visited by both Ryan Day and Larry Johnson during the bye week after making official visits to OSU's top competition in Alabama (Keeley) and Georgia (Wilson) respectively.
The vibe coming out of those visits and subsequent time spent with Day and Johnson was not as uneasy as Twitter would have you believe (shocking!). Ohio State is still battling hard for both guys and remains very much in the picture.
Again, there are different battles being fought here. With Keeley it is Ohio State selling him on being Chase Young and Alabama selling him on being Will Anderson. With Wilson it is more of a geographical thing at this point. Wilson fits both the UGA and OSU schemes well and so a big part of this is going to come down to whether or not Wilson is comfortable enough to leave the region and put his trust in Larry Johnson.
Right now I would have it Wilson to OSU and Keeley to Alabama. I continue to believe that it's going to be difficult to pull both guys, though not impossible. What Ohio State really has going for it with Wilson is the two-pronged approach of Larry Johnson and his history of developing elite pass rushers coupled with Ohio State's lack of dudes who play the game the way Wilson does, as a pure speed guy off the edge. While the scheme fit works at UGA as well, the Buckeyes just don't have guys like Wilson. They have very talented players, players with as much talent as Wilson has, but they are just different types of defensive linemen. Wilson is more Dwight Freeney or, maybe to be more fair on the expectations front, Noah Spence, than he is Chase Young or Joey Bosa or Jack Sawyer and he's exactly what Ohio State is looking to add to its arsenal.
The intel coming out of the last week and how these visits and conversations have been digested, has been pretty positive for Ohio State in its pursuit of Wilson. There is a little less certainty around Keeley, who continues to be at the center of a tug-of-war between the Buckeyes and Crimson Tide. I think Keeley is still pretty torn and is just working through things right now and trying to come to a decision, from those I've spoken with, but there is palpable optimism on Wilson coming out of the visit with Day and Johnson this past week.
So if you're scoring at home on Monday October 17th, I'd have it Wilson to OSU, Uiagalelei to OSU and Keeley to Alabama.
