1 killed, 2 hospitalized in teen rivalry that ended in gunfire by Glen Oaks High, officials say
One person died and two were hospitalized after a fight ended with gunfire late Friday afternoon at a house near Glen Oaks High School, officials said.
Deputies responded around 2:40 p.m. to the 6000 block of Avocado Drive in Baton Rouge, about a block from the school.
East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said the bullets struck one man and two female victims.
She said the shooting unfolded during an altercation, but was unable to say what the people were fighting about.
Officials said one of the victims was pronounced dead on the scene. The other two were transported to a hospital.
At the scene of the crime, yellow tape blocked off a stretch of several homes for hours after the shooting. Sheriff's SUVs and patrol cars lined the street, where bystanders came and went.
A woman who said she's lived in the area for four decades and asked to withhold her name for safety's sake, called the shooting a culmination of a teen rivalry that had been "boiling and boiling up."
"They started fighting at school," she said. "Glen Oaks High School."
Another woman said she saw what preceded the gunfire: a fight among a group of 15 or so girls, including the one who was fatally shot, that "lasted for about seven minutes."
At the sound of gunfire, the first woman — the one who identified herself as a 40-year resident — said she rushed outside to see what was going on.
She said some people in a car started shooting at a nearby house, and that a man in a blue shirt and a gun in each hand fired back.
Outside, she said she saw paramedics tending to an injured female, who was on the ground holding her left abdomen.
One of the men who was struck, she said, "he was shot somewhere up in the chest."
The woman said she heard "about six or seven" shots fired.
Another neighbor said she saw a girl lying dead in the street, a woman "shot in the guts" clutching her midsection and a man "shot in the mouth."
On the opposite side of the crime scene, a larger group of onlookers lingered a couple hours after the shootout.
Kids were running around while adults tried to make sense of what happened, talking to each other and on their phones.
One woman on her cellphone told the person on the other line that the shooters were "young and dumb and stupid."
Around 4:30 p.m., a white coroner van pulled up. A uniformed crew lifted a covered body from the ground and into the back of the vehicle, which drove off about 30 minutes later.

Teenage girl killed in crossfire during shooting in Glen Oaks area, officials say
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials have released new details about a shooting that resulted in the death of a teenage girl and injured two others in a Glen Oaks neighborhood on Friday, Nov. 12.
A spokesperson for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office released a statement Saturday, Nov. 13 identifying the victim as 16-year-old Tremiyah Lindsey.
Tremiyah was in a vehicle with her mother and her brother when they arrived at a home in the 6000 block of Avocado Drive around 3 p.m. Friday, officials say.
Authorities say Tremayne Lindsey, 20, then got out of the vehicle with an assault rifle and began shooting
A relative of the residents at the home grabbed a firearm and returned fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies say Tremiyah, Tremayne, and their mother were all struck during the exchange of gunfire.
Tremiyah Lindsey was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the mother was injured but is expected to recover. Tremayne Lindsey was taken to an area hospital and is currently in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
Upon his release from the hospital, deputies say Tremayne Lindsey will be charged with five counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing and other charges may be pending.
East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore was at the scene of the shooting Friday afternoon.
“It’s just unfortunate, sad,” said Moore. “We had another person, another young person lost their life and we need to find a way as a community to stop this.”
“This is a very nice neighborhood and a lot of really good people here. And I’m sure that they’re very disappointed and shocked that this is going on. Shows it can happen anywhere. Happens all over Baton Rouge and just yet another unfortunate situation that we need to find out why things like this occur,” added Moore.
