why would men want to watch this and how is this so popular? i walked by my girl watching this and it looked like a harlequin novel on the tv screen. i thought it was some trash tv thats catered to women. Then a couple weeks later i see that its the most popular series in netflix history. Is it actually worth checking out?
Hahah

Black men in America need to stop big upping clowns like Tyler Perry and realize that there's damn near no content being made for black men anymore. Its all either written or directed by women with weird ass agendas.

Dudes wouldn't even be trying to give something like this a chance if there was other shyt available

I know the execs at Disney are pissed that ABC lost Shonda Rhimes over a fukking extra comp pass to Disneyworld and now she's given Netflix it's most watched show ever.

It's cool for what it is, but misses the opportunity to actually make a statement. Downton Abbey is a compelling show because of the upstairs downstairs dynamic between the Crawley family and the servants of their estate. It tackles a ton of social hierarchy issues and you watch the show progress from a British aristocracy to the rising of the working class.

Bridgerton is just a love story. It's a nice one and watchable enough, but that's it. There's a point in the show that one character finally says out loud what we've all been wondering, and that's why there's such diversity amongst all these lords and ladies. The convo lasts 30 seconds and is never brought up again. This all seems way too much like a hyper idealistic fairytale. You're telling me, in spite of the reason they give for this diversity, not a single one of these old white folks looks down on these black people and them coming up in the world? They're ok with all these IR relationships and wealth/land being distributed amongst minorities? It's kind of striking that a subplot about a young woman trying to pin her unborn child on a different man is the most compelling story told in this show.

I read a NY times article that billed it as alternative history. Maybe that’s what the showrunners and writers were purposefully aiming towards and weren’t actually trying to have the race conversation.

Ironically, I’ve seen a lot of brehs on here complain about having to constantly watch black plight in every show and movie and then there’s this with actual black nobles and royalty:pachaha:

I don't think the folks behind this show has any interest in delving into serious racial dynamics in the universe they created.

They wanted to have a diverse soap opera set during the Regency era in England and the show is laser focused on doing romance and soapy drama.

See, I could rock with this 100% except they make the deliberate point of having a conversation about race in the show. The black lady who raised Simon specifically talks about how the king being with a black woman gave opportunities to all these black people to rise in society and be judged by more than just their skin color. So obviously race relations are a thing in the world they're depicting.

I'm one of the people that's tired of black faces only being predominate or even represented in shows that have to do with our plight, but if you're gonna make the point of mentioning it, at least do something with it. It's particularly jarring when you think of the setting and then think of the not so distant example of Meghan Markle marrying into the royal family and all the shyt that came with that.

You say that as if Kenya Burris alone don't have four shows running simultaneously.

Ain’t none of those fukking shows geared towards black men :camby:

one google :mjlol:
Social Media Blasts Kenya Barris for Yet Another Project Featuring a Bi-Racial Couple
The claim was that women write and direct all these shows, I see we're moving the goalposts now? :comeon:

But no TV show geared just towards men is likely to last long, TV programmers in general are always female-oriented in their approach and Black men are just 6% of the US population. Women Viewers Continue to Rule Broadcast Primetime | Broadcasting+Cable

Blackish is an all-Black family and #BlackAF is an all-Black family, but instead you have a google link to some movie when we ain't even talking about movies?

And you talk like you don't know who John Singleton, Donald Glover, Lee Daniels, and Salim Akil are either.

I made it through the first episode. Tried to keep an open mind. Think it's crap.:manny:

Not mad at it though, its obviously just a woman's fantasy so whatever, I'll just let them have it.
