I used to hate De Palma. Always thought Scarface was overrated and his stuff from the 90s onwards was mostly weak. Didn't like Blow Out when I seen it when I was younger. Thought it was cheesy trash.
But I started to check some of his earlier stuff...Dressed to Kill, Sisters, Phantom of the Paradise (WILD film), Body Double, rewatched Blow Out and he's become one of my favorite directors.
On a technical level he is almost the GOAT. Very few directors can pull off complex set pieces as well and make it feel effortless. I appreciate Scarface a lot more now too.
The thing with De Palma is he's like Tarantino in that he's equally influenced by low brow b-movie stuff as he is high art. It's the way he combines the high and low that I find so compelling. His shyt can be tacky and trashy but it's done in a way that feels creative and his shyt always looks great.
Crazy to think he came up with Scorsese and at one point was probably a bigger name, at least in terms of getting big studio films. But he did start to drop a lot of bombs and he's fallen off pretty hard.
