Goldberg gave him a concussion. It wasn't the sole reason for his career coming to an end. Bret wrestled Goldberg again the next night on Nitro. If Bret thought Goldberg was so wreckless and unsafe why did he get in the ring with him again the very next night? Fact is Bret continued to wrestle after the kick from Goldberg (he had 8 more matches) including a damn Hardcore Match against Terry Funk where he was taking chair shots and trash can shots to the head. I'm sure that didn't help his concussion. He even admitted in his book that he didn't know how badly he was hurt and kept wrestling and that is what really fukked him up.
