I’m on the fence with Brent Faiyaz. I think he has the ability to make dope music but a lot of it just comes out real hollow and soulless.

He has a line where he’s just talking and says that his personality is narcissistic yet empathetic. I could see that 100% in all of his music.

Sums up this dude, 6lack, and whoever else is in that lane. They aren’t even creative enough to write about without making it so plain. They want to be The Weeknd but don’t have anything close to his ear for music or writing ability.

He makes solid music but we ain’t about to pretend he’s an “excellent“ songwriter or R&B savant

The criticism is not only in the subject matter but in the lack of creativity in the writing. This new angsty R&B is just mumble rap lyrics that are being harmonized (for the most part).

The Weeknd popularized the sound but he can actually write really well. I’m not a huge Frank Ocean fan but he’s also a good writer. These new kids just want to cheat the process of artistry by letting production carry them.

i just can’t get with his voice..tbh it has this nasal, hollow quality that doesn’t really ‘express’ well.. i like some of his stacking skills and the vocal stem on the intro is fye..songwriting leaves a lot to be desired imo and the melodies aren’t sticking for me.. I’ll keep listening though.. this is only my 4th listen front to back.

4 listens seems like enough to have a solid opinion

His voice and tone makes all his music just mediocre to me

This was fire , I don’t get the critiques , he does these little vocal runs that just sit well with me. Production as always is on point.
