My aunt owns a garment factory in El Salvador. She receives contracts from fashion companies to make their clothes using cheap labor down there (she lives in Canada and keeps tabs on everything using cctv cameras). She's a millionaire. I don't know what the initial investment requirements to open a factory outside the US is but you should look into that.

:ehh:

I have a few questions.

Did she use her own money beforehand or was she able to get a VC to invest?
How long did she have to stay down there before everything took off for her?
Does she have 9 y/o's working for 50 cents a day?:to:..... and if so, how does one recruit those little guys?:patrice:

A garment factory costs about $1-2 million to set up in Pakistan, so probably similar in El Salvador, if not more. You can sometimes get factories on rent in some places too, but obviously that's more expensive and less flexibility in terms of equipment etc. No one is going to give you an order, you'll have to work with a sourcing agent who will eat at least 5% and give you crappy prices. Labour depends on place to place, you go through local fixers or unions to find workers.

I'm pretty sure I remember you from SOHH, and I believe you've been up on financial matters since then, what do you do?

Why don't you just invest in the stock market?

I've been looking into trying my hand at forex trading, but I'm no wolf and I don't want to be food out there.:lupe:

You can try mutual or hedge funds or something like that. My knowledge of the stock market is very rudimentary and I am looking to get into it when I have 1-2 grand but you should be able to easily play the market with the amount of money you have. You just have to study the subject and know where to invest.

Currently, I have a business that sells niche financial/legal products to high net-worth private clients. That's as specific as I'm going to get. Before this, I used to advise and raise capital for a subset of the transportation sector on Wall Street.

Okay, I was just wondering, I won't pry into that anymore.

I have one last question though; if you had to start over with $10,000 and no connections, what you do to try and come up?

Alybaba answered most of the general questions but I honestly don't know the specifics about her factory. All I know is she tried to get my mom to live down there and oversee the factory. She turned her down to continue running her bagel store. I'll ask my mom when I talk to her again.

I'm back with some info after an offhand conversation with my mom. Apparently the land was the most expensive part, not the factory. They also do not get contracts from fashion companies - I was wrong. What they do, and how they make their money, is copy popular American designs (Abercrombie and Fitch for example) and then sell those cheap knockoffs back to Salvadorians :ehh:

They don't use kids. But the people earn relatively livable wages. Ill get back to you on the total coast of the factory when I get that info. But from what i gather, it was nowhere near 1 to 2 mill Alybaba mentioned.
