I'm going to back up a bit and ask you a question.

What are you looking to learn? What questions brought you to wanting to read philosophy?

I've always been philosophical and questioned life since I was a little kid

:russ:

why a few brehs derailing my philosophy thread

I only know the names of the basics like Aristotle, Socrates, and Marcus Aurelius

That's too bad. Africa has a rich philosophical tradition stretching back thousands of years - see post 28 in this thread.

The Maxims of Ptahhotep from ancient Egypt were written nearly 3,000 years before the supposed birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

yeah brehs, I'm I'm reading philosophy books in a few days, I'm also going to read about artificial intelligence, I recently bought two books on AI
Plato's Republic, and the Five Dialogues that discuss the trial and death of Socrates.
Then Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.

Start with the basics.
If you wanna get the basics of what people talkin' 'bout with AI, get Rene Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy for the mind-body argument. Uh.... if you wanna look further into AI and philosophy, check with John Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment:

They was debating that shyt back in the 80s or sumn... issa bunch of other stuff out there. I'm studying one of Aristotle's works right now. Philosophy texts even when short they can be heavy. Reading without taking notes is like sellin' raw without a scale to measure and bag up, you hustlin' backwards.

Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality was good too, definitely read that one.

wittgenstein (tractatus, philosophical investigations (if you can stomach it.)
:mjlol::mjlol::mjlol:

You 'bout to scare breh off or turn him into an incel fukkin' with the Tractatus and Philosophical Investigations.... may as well suggest Cratylus.

No, I had the opportunity on a few occasions. Close I got was The Art of War.
I try to read the major works in the western canon before tippin' off. I been reading some African philosophy and spirituality, and got a book on Ifa somewhere. I'm see the uptick in interest to Chinese philosophy and might start reading later.
Been focusing on tightening up my logic skills since I took time off from school to work.

Best of luck on your journey.

In terms of the Western canon, I believe John Stuart Mill, Immanuel Kant, and John Rawls really embody the post-Enlightenment Western philosophical tradition.

But I've been veering away from Western thought for several years now. More interesting things happening amongst our people - like Achille Mbembe's ideas:

Some minor works of his -

Read that over the holidays...Classic. Im not sure why its not more popular, especially during this "Incel" era we're in.

Naw seriously, that shyt is a classic fr. If reading was still taken seriously in school this would need to be required high school reading.
i think you are focused on the wrong ish when it comes to some black writers but ima stop "derailing" the thread tho

I hope you don’t mean that about MED. I’ve dealt with that arrogant fukk nikka personally and he about as deep as a tea cup. :skip:

Start with a book that gives a general overview so you can learn about different schools of thought, Western vs Eastern, etc.

There are also good YouTube channels to help introduce you to Philosophy. With that said, Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching and Dostoyevsky’s Notes from the Underground come to mind for me. African philosophy is also very fascinating as well.
The Tao Te Ching is TERSE, homie will not be ready for that eventhough it is short. I'm reading the Zhuangzhi (Ziporyn translation) and definitely will be reading the Tao te ching again after that. Those introductory suggestions were good.
