They probably have someone in mind. I've seen job postings that matched up PERFECTLY with an existing employee...to the point where we knew exactly who the hiring manager wanted.
Sometimes, they have a "need" but it's not urgent and they just wanna see what type of candidates apply....essentially waiting for a unicorn to take the job and not just a good candidate.
Every job I've had, the interviews were easy and chill. You can tell when they want you. The worst interviews were with companies that clearly made up their mind before I got there. HR says "Brother Mouzone fits all the qualifications so you WILL interview him Mr. Manager." The manager says "fine" but the demeanor and questions they ask make it clear they don't want you.
