Not sure what the name of the street is but that street that has the trolleys is the divider between french quarter and non french quarter, usually hotels are super affordable on the non french quarter side

For recs I usually check out Spotted Cat and walk up and down Magazine street. Maybe drive out to the Vietnamese pho spots for a change of pace
