Even before the NOI they weren't fukking with him. People don't realize enough how important it was that there was a black man saying that he was the greatest and that he was beautiful. That alone shook white america and challenged white structures, ideologies, and beliefs to their core. It's great. And reminded me, just like when he died, that so much of our sports media and "white sports fan" economy are bullshyt. When Ali died, everyone and their momma ran out caves to say RIP, how great he was, and note his impact on society via fighting for civil rights. Yet those same white media figures and fans complain the second modern athletes say anything about society. It's "stick to sports" then, but for Ali they wanted to act like they loved him. Ali was enemy #1 when he "dodged" the draft, and before that when he switched to NOI they hated him too. He was certainly popular with a solid second of white people - the documentary has a lot of footage of him speaking to white groups or crowds he supported his message - but overall white people were not fukking with him.
