Why would they care to do that in a case of emergency, that would be like the 20th most important thing to worry about. I track flights all the time and they always drop off once they are no longer in contact with approach.

Heres a live view of JFK, those planes aren't in the air. Transponder is activated to track as soon as the beacon lights are turned on and the plane is set for pushback.

They turn it off cause all publicity isn't good publicity. Especially when it comes to accidents. Its protocol
