Breaking: PBC, Fox finalize multi-year deal; network will provide large budget - The Ring

BREAKING: PBC, FOX FINALIZE MULTI-YEAR DEAL; NETWORK WILL PROVIDE LARGE BUDGET

When Al Haymon formed Premier Boxing Champions in early 2015, his vision was simple: buy television time on major networks, and in a few years, flip the model and receive license fees in return.

As PBC’s deal with ESPN and NBC expired, with nothing to show for it, it appeared Haymon’s ambitious plan abjectly failed. Not so fast.

Haymon maintained a relationship with Fox, a network he made time-buys with, and his strategy worked.

PBC and Fox have finalized a long-term deal for fights to appear on both Fox and FS1 with an annual boxing budget that eclipses $50 million, multiple sources told The Ring. The deal, which will be announced Tuesday, will kick off in December; the agreement calls for 10 championship-level fights on Fox, with at least another 12 shows on FS1. That’s to be added to Showtime’s existing budget, estimated at over $50 million.

Meanwhile, Eddie Hearn, who runs U.K.-based promotional company Matchroom and recently announced a wide-sweeping deal with online streaming service DAZN, is estimated to have an annual budget of $125 million.

“Between Showtime and Fox, PBC will have a bigger pool of budget money than any other promoter in boxing, including Eddie Hearn with DAZN,” an industry source who was not authorized to speak publicly told The Ring.

It was only last week that Showtime announced a new three-year deal with PBC, Haymon’s stable of fighters which totals over 160. It’s not just the biggest group of fighters in the sport, but the best, with two boxers on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list and at least 20 at the elite level of the sport.

Showtime announced plans for expanded coverage in 2019 and beyond, including monthly shows. A major criticism of PBC has long been the inactivity of some its best fighters, but that should no longer be an issue.

Between Showtime and Fox, there figures to be around 20 top-flight telecasts involving A-level fighters. A trickier problem will be how each network shares the best talent.

“As much as we would like to, we know there is a limit to what we can do here,” President of Sports and Event Programming for Showtime Steven Espinoza told The Ring last week. “There’s a limit at every network at every platform. It does take a collection of networks and platforms for the sport to be healthy.”

It’s likely Showtime will retain rights to certain weight classes they’ve invested heavily in, like welterweight, with other divisions heading over to Fox. Haymon’s roster is deepest at featherweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and light heavyweight, but there are budding stars at other weights, too.

Heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder is signed to PBC; Jermall Charlo is a middleweight; Mikey Garcia, perhaps his best fighter, competes at lightweight for the time being.

It’s an arms race in boxing: Hearn’s alliance with DAZN begins later this month; Top Rank revised its agreement with ESPN last month, and the deal now runs for seven years and calls for 54 live events per year.

HBO is still in the mix — at least for now — and boasts the biggest stars in the sport in Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

But it’s Haymon and PBC who once again lead the way.

So Eddie Hearns $125 million budget, PBC $100 million budget, Bob Arum whatever his ESPN shyt is.......
It's no fukking excuse for trash fights anymore or people like Stevenson holding belts hostage. The money is there, make these dudes fight or foh.
Spence needs to fight someone, the one Charlo needs to fight Hurd, the other Charlo needs to fight Kid Choc or the winner of the Jacobs fight, Loma needs to keep fighting names, after the GGG fight Canelo needs to fight a big PBC name, etc. Seems like they have money to burn now and can still get their % so shouldn't be any hold ups or dumb promoter beef.

nah homie .... :manny:

I was already of this deal being closed for awhile now

I've been in Brooklyn since this past Friday and will be here till the end of the month to cover the PBC Garcia Porter this weekend and tie up some other business...

Didn't wanna be accused of "spamming" the board with another PBC victory news item..

We gotta let the "others" eat for a quick minute....

It's enough "cake" at the Dinner Table even when the OPPS can't.afford to.win purse bids and can't comp tickets for their media fanboys as well as secure a venue in a real boxing town like NYC...PHILLY...or VEGAS

But y'all have witnessed the ILLogic behavior of that so called billionaire kid...

Cause sooner or later ..

We will all see who the "PROFIT" is

Top fighters from rival promoters still won't face each other yet unless it is on PPV or a mandatory.
No Crawford vs Spence or Khan
Kid Choc fights at 168 now
Charlo vs the winner of Jacobs fight if Derevyanchenko wins maybe, if not don't expect Charlo vs Jacobs. HBO won't risk another one of their guys taken an L like Kovalev (still didn't pick up the rematch)
Hurd and Lomo are coming off of injuries
Charlo is the mandatory for GGG vs Canelo winner let's see if he keeps the belt.

Haymon seems to be the closest one to making those fights possible.
He is trying to make Wilder vs Joshua
Has some of his fighters with Hearn and DAZN.
Got Alverez vs Kovalev done

If there were less titles than this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Can someone breakdown the competition between Hearn and Haymon? I read an article the other month where Hearn was telling the reporter that Haymon needs to come to the table and basically “merge” with him. Now I see Haymon has responded with a deal that seems to the same if not bigger than Hearns.

their is no competition...to be honest

Hearn just would like many to believe their is...

You can't compete with a guy who has over 120 fighters as his clientele

Featuring 14 champions and top tier prizefighters in the game ...

Everyone from heavyweight champion Wilder..to Tank Davis..to Danny Garcia and Errol Spence to name.a few

And for the record HEARN has tried to make offers to.all of them to fight on his little app...

And the vast majority have turned him down...

The flexibility and revenue opportunities Haymon gives these fighters is unmatched

So there is no need for Haymon to "merge" with Hearn..

Haymon is a manager ...Hearn is a promoter..

They are in two different lanes

And operate distinct business models..

If anything HEARN needs HAYMON because of his talent pool...

Plus some of Hearns best fighters are still advised by Haymon (Jacobs, Khan, Beterbiev, Vargas). Aside for AJ he doesn't have anyone that fans draw too. He said he will be signing a P4P fighter tomorrow. I thought it would be Rigo but some else suggested that it was Usyk, and that makes sense since he was trying to make a fight with Bellew who he already promotes. Haymon just locked down Showtime, Fox, and the Barclay center for the next couple of years.

UFC 3 was underwhelming, time to come back home and put this together.

yeah it was underwhelming....but UFC still has a greater presence on television and in the general public than boxing

smh it's sad :snoop:

Buffalo Wild wings and none of the other major sport lounge chains i.e (hooters, twin peaks) gave a rats azz about this GARCIA vs. PORTER fight

in fact with the exception of the old Mayweather bouts who rarely see boxing in the sports bars

this shyt has got to change

BOXING has a bad visibility presence

im in brooklyn right now....

but i gurantee when i go back home to georgia the only place i will be able to watch the GGG/CANELO fight will be at a damn mexican restaurant....

and that's still a "maybe"...

because they only brodcasted fights on CINCO DE MAYO

thier is no way you can develop a pay per view fighter in this age with so low visibility ...

none of these guys...crawford...spence nor wilder is registering a blip on the radar outside of the boxing afficiando's world :manny:
