Sony Looking to Buy Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania from Konami

Rumors about a Silent Hill reboot have been swirling about for weeks now, and a recent post on ***** has now thrown two additional Konami franchises into the mix.

In January, an anonymous ***** user claiming to be a Konami employee stated that Sony would like to purchase the Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Castlevania franchises in order to create a series of PS5 exclusive titles.

According to the post, Sony hopes to remake Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the original games that launched the series over 20 years ago, with the help of Hideo Kojima.

The company also wants to soft reboot the Silent Hill series, possibly also with Kojima’s involvement. Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of both the Silent Hill and Siren series of survival horror games, and Ikumi Nakamura, the lead concept artist for Tango Gameworks’ The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2, would supposedly also be on the team.

For the Castlevania series, Sony apparently has a full reboot in mind, which it would accomplish with the collaboration of Koji Igarashi and Shutari Iida, two veteran developers who have worked on multiple games in the franchise. The reboot would be developed by Sony Japan and result in a 3D Bloodborne-style overhaul for the series.

Normally, posts on ***** need to be taken with a grain of salt. However, the information shared by the anonymous Konami employee meshes with information leaked or hinted at by other sources in the past few months. Back in November 2019, Hideo Kojima posted on Twitter: “As to make the scariest horror game, I’ll watch the scary movies in order to awaken my horror soul.” Due to Kojima’s past involvement with Silent Hills, the game starring Norman Reedus that was cancelled in 2015, many hopeful fans took this to be a hint that the game designer was again working on a horror title.

Also in January, Masahiro Ito, an artist who worked on the first four Silent Hill games, made his own cryptic Twitter post in which he stated, “I’m working on a title as a core member. I hope the title won’t be cancelled.” Many readers interpreted this to also be a reference to Silent Hills, and therefore a possible insinuation that Ito was again working on a game for the series.

More recently, online news outlet Rely on Horror introduced Sony into the story by reporting that the company is the driving force behind reviving the series and mending the rift between Konami and Kojima. According to the article, Sony will back the development of two Silent Hill titles, one a soft reboot and the other an episodic TellTale-type game, and Kojima would be at the helm with full creative freedom.

Why the fukk would Konami sell their most precious IPs? :what:

They might not make the games anymore but they still make a lot of money from pachinko which is based on those IPs. Not to mention Netflix Castlevania where they also make money.

I understand licensing them to Sony but selling them outright will be one of the dumbest business decisions ever made.

 Konami aint doing shyt with them....
Actually they are. They make more money of pachinko than video games. People also think Konami is some washed up some dying company but they’re one of the most profitable gaming companies in Japan.

I think licensing them to Sony makes more sense but for Sony it makes zero sense. They will spend their own money developing the game and publishing it whilst Konami takes a cut whilst still owning the IP and can port it to Xbox or switch in the future and make more money without spending a dime.

In the case of MGS...

Ain't nobody buy a MGS game that doesn't have "A Hideo Kojima Game" in it...

So what is the point of holding a franchise that isn't making any money for you hostage?

Give that man his franchise back so he can stop making fedex simulators...
