So if it returns in October, they should have playoffs? How would the scheduling work in that case? Play for playoff basketball for 2 months then go another 11 months with no basketball because they didn't want to cancel the season?

Push back new season and shorten it as well. It also would not take two months, playoffs would have to be shorten. There are a lot of things they would have to answer if they completely ignore the season such as draft, etc. For now it looks like NBA is still trying hard to keep playoffs alive.

It wouldn't be fair to the playoff teams to restart the season if they're pushed back to October.

Maybe they could have two leagues, one for playoff teams and one for non-playoff teams.
