Jimmy couldn't receive that extension from them because they legally could not do so. It wasn't a matter of want. Some deals are structured in a way to where you have to wait for free agency to get the full value of your deal. Jimmy (or his agent) couldn't understand that. Wiggins had gotten his extension a week into the season and Towns didn't sign his extension til a year later (after the blowup happened). What Jimmy's biggest problem was that when he got traded there, with Thibs running things, he was under the impression that the team was gonna be structured around him when in reality the hope was that Jimmy would light a fire under Wiggins (and Towns to a lesser extent) to where the team would benefit.

Miami was the one team that was willing to build the entire structure around Jimmy and they had to go through hoops just to make all the money work. It's one of the reasons why Philly couldn't just hand him the full max fresh off the plane.
