Why is everyone surprised? EVERYONE's History books been whitewashed. I argued with my White History Teacher in 11th Grade cause he tried to down play Malcolm role in the civil rights movement. Texas is and will always be a racist state. This doesn't do kids any good, this only continues the lies and it further fuels white privilege. It's Black Parents Job to make sure their kids get the proper history. Do not trust the school system. My parents had us watching "Roots, Missississpi Burning, etc" all the race movies growing up. My mother also allowed me to go on a field trip to see Malcolm X when it came out when I was in the 7th grade.

The vast majority of black peoples of the New World, the United States, Brazil, Jamaica, Cuba, Hispaniola, Colombia, etc arrived here via the slave trade.
Well no shyt that recent African immigrants weren't slaves in the New World.
And all black peoples have ancestors that go farther back than slavery but it's still apart of the history.
Im not an African immigrant I was born and raised in VA and honestly you are being very condescending so its know point in arguing with you when your points dont even make any sense

When you start really discovering the non mainstream facts and stories of black history it can be overwhelming. Just the amount of untold or unknown history is terrible. Some many crimes committed on black people its ridiculous.

Like I said, everyone has ancestors before slavery. You can take specific tests to find out your ethnic group.
But to glance over slavery like it never happened or to briefly mention it is laughable, especially when it has everything to do with race relations today.

Preciate the post. I doubt if many people look at slavery from an economical viewpoint. I certainly didn't. Makes you wonder how many of these big corporations today was started with "slave money". Hell, makes you wonder how many businesses PERIOD was started with inherited "slave money. Yea, we need our reparations.

Of course and some of the movies were slightly whitewashed too but you have to remember I was under 10 watching these films and the KKK is terrifying for black child. I remember the nightmares I had and I hated white sheets so all my sheets had to have color growing up, lol. If anything those movies loosed me up for the real sh!t once I did my research as I got older. What crazy is these racist loved to document their demonic behavior so it's all here for us to see.
Now seeing this photo could be very traumatizing for a young child. My father gave me a Black History Book when I was 11 and I saw this photo in it. My point is it's up to us as Black Parents to educate our children of the truth. We cannot allow these white school systems to whitewash what happen.

But near the end there's a table (Table 5) and if I'm reading that correctly, according to 2011 dollars, Slavery was worth 10 trillion dollars in 1860 to the South alone.

I think that we were "lulled to sleep" so to speak via integration, "propped up negroes", reality t.v, sports, ignorant rap music, and even a black president. Basicly we came to think that "everything is ok, racism is dead". We saw these multi-millionaire entertainers and athletes (propped up negroes) and came under the impression that blacks had equal opportunity to succeed in this country. History was intentionally altered and suppressed also. Schools aren't going to mention things like the Black WallStreet Massacre or the Tuskegee Experiment.
But now with the internet, the lid is coming off. A kid records a cop shooting a man running in the back in S.C and it goes viral. A group of college kids on a bus chanting racial slurs is recorded and uploaded. Goes viral. Racism and prejudices that has been going on for hundreds of years behind closed doors is now being witnessed in real time by us all. America is changing. An undeniable shift in conciousness towards race is happening in black america. We are waking up. I think when the dust clears, this time that we are in now will be seen as the spark that ignited a new flame. Trayvon Martins', Michael Browns',etc deaths will NOT be in vain when its all said and done. They will be remembered in OUR history books.
