I wouldn't call it falling back at all. As long as there are no American casualties Trump has the option to de-escalate without losing any standing. He took out one of the most powerful men in the Middle East. The number 2 of an enemy nation and without a man lost on our end. In response Iran shot missiles at a US base and killed Iraqis. As long as nothing changes overnight he can address the nation, talk some shyt, rattle some sabres and then move on to his next scandal or ill thought out Twitter remark.
Will this be the end of Iran's "revenge?" Oh hell no. Likely they will just increase proxy activities but just remain a bit more caution in areas of direct US influence like embassies.
What seems to have happened is that Iran flew too close to the sun this time. They escalated a few months ago and had Trump asking them to let him get his lick back and figured he was just an idiot. He is, but he's also extremely dangerous. They learned the hard way. We shall see where this goes in the AM I suppose.
