Walt's ego has always made him take stupid risks. He shouldn't even have the book, let alone in the bathroom.

But this is the same guy that turned down a good job and the chance to pay off his medical bills so he could cook meth in season 1. This is the same guy that almost snitched on himself to Hank because he got a little tipsy in season 4. The same guy that threatened two drug dealers in season 2, when he wasn't even cooking anymore. This is the same guy that told Hank "half a mill in cash" when asked "what's in the bag?" in season 3. The same guy that leased two brand new sports cars and walks around with a $6,000 watch in front of his DEA brother-in-law in season 5.

He's never been particularly careful and he's gotten less careful as the series goes on.
