Late Wednesday night, Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin had some strong words about the altercation that occurred after the Simeon-Morgan Park game at Chicago State.
“[Two Simeon players] started it,” Irvin said. “I’ll just say that. One of the Simeon players pushed [Lamont Walker]. They want to fight. That’s just classic Simeon. They think they can get away with everything and do what they want to do.”
“We don’t want to do that. We are here to play basketball. I guess their leader thinks it is ok to do that. Which is [Simeon coach] Rob Smith.”
Smith hasn’t spoken with the media yet about the altercation.
Both teams were told to remain in their locker rooms for over 30 minutes after the game. Police and Chicago Public Schools security didn’t want the players leaving the arena while the situation outside was still tenuous.
“After awhile they knew someone was out there shooting,” Irvin said. “Billy Garrett huddled the team up and we prayed that no one got hurt. Everyone was just hoping no one got hurt.”
Irvin said he didn’t think the shooting was connected with the fight after the game.
“I don’t think so,” Irvin said. “Probably just some kids getting into it. I don’t think so. I hope and pray not. When you come to an event like this you want everything to go great. You don’t want somebody to get shot and someone to get hurt. I’m upset that happened. They did watch us play and we fought so that might have escalated it.”
Irvin is already looking ahead to the next game against Simeon.
“We will beat Simeon the next time we play,” he said.
