Gotta make some moves, the possibility of playing the Broncos in Denver in the playoffs got me shook
New England Patriots trade deadline rumors: Cornerback, offensive tackle most pressing needs
Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have made seven trades since the beginning of training camp, so what's one or two more?
Of course, the Pats don't
need to make a deal by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline; they're 7-0 and steamrolling every team that is unfortunate enough to draw them on the schedule.
....But the Pats could stand to upgrade depth, especially at cornerback and, to a lesser extent, offensive tackle.
At corner, Malcolm Butler and Logan Ryan have locked down the starting jobs on the outside. Undrafted rookie Justin Coleman has served as the No. 3 corner, and the team also recently claimed Rashaan Melvin, a long 6-foot-2 corner, off waivers from Baltimore. Overall, the Pats are relying heavily on their deep group of safeties to cover, as we saw in Week 6 when Patrick Chung took T.Y. Hilton.
At tackle, Nate Solder is on the injured reserve and top backup Marcus Cannon has yet to practice since suffering a toe injury against the Colts. That leaves third-stringer Cameron Fleming as a starter with no true backup on the active roster. The team could stand to add one for depth purposes.
Some names to consider:
CORNERBACK
Marcus Cooper, Kansas City: There's plenty of reason to link Cooper to the Pats. First, he went to Rutgers. Second, New England
reportedly put in a waiver claim on Cooper in 2013, but lost out to the Chiefs. Worth noting: the other player they lost out on in 2013,
according to this ESPN story, was defensive tackle Chris Jones, who eventually ended up with the team. Cooper is 6-foot-2 with good speed and can be had for a cheap price.
Sean Smith, Kansas City: The 6-foot-3 Smith is a free agent at the end of the 2015 season. He'll be 29 years old next year. If the Chiefs decide they don't want to sign Smith for the long-term, they may as well receive some compensation for him at the deadline.
Jason McCourty, Tennessee: This would be fun, but also is unlikely given McCourty's contract situation. He has a cap hit of $8.8 million in 2016, according to Spotrac.com.
Alterraun Verner, Tampa Bay: Now the slot corner in Tampa, Verner's playing time has plummeted. The Bucs could be looking to move the 26-year-old corner, who carries a $6.75 million cap hit if he's on the roster on the fifth league day of 2016,
according to Spotrac.
Jonathan Joseph, Houston: In his 10th NFL season, Joseph would essentially fill the void left when Tarell Brown went to the IR. The only problem: $4.5 million of his hefty 2016 salary is guaranteed. The Pats are unlikely to take that on.
OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Joe Thomas, Cleveland: The odds of the Pats making a move for a big name are low. And Thomas, the former No. 3 overall pick, is certainly a big name. The Pats would have to part with something substantial to acquire him, which makes this scenario unlikely.
New England would be intrigued because of Thomas' overwhelming talent, but also because of his team-friendly contract. Beginning in 2016, he can essentially be cut for free. So, in essence, that Pats could borrow the 30-year-old Thomas for their Super Bowl run and then let him go at the end of the season.
His name has
popped up in recent trade rumors.
Joe Staley, San Francisco: The 49ers are an absolute train wreck, and team may be able to take some draft picks in exchange for the 31-year-old Staley, a Pro Bowler the past four seasons. He'd be great for the Pats with Nate Solder done for the year, but are they willing to give up enough to get him? Probably not. The Niners won't be looking for a sixth-round pick here. They'll want something legitimate in exchange for Staley, whose name was
recently floated by CBS' Jason LaConfora as a candidate to be moved at the deadline.
