There was no negotiating. Lincoln winning the presidency was why the war was inevitable. That was the line in the sand for the South. The Republican Party, which Lincoln was the nominee for, was formed by abolitionists whose stated goal was to stop the expansion of slavery.

You can say that with hindsight now, but the historical record proves you wrong. Did you even read that article I posted which had first/second source citations?

Lincoln was willing to make significant compromises on slavery to preserve the Union. Moreover, Lincoln wasn't a 'radical Republican' like Thaddeus Stevens.
