Naruto always had weak filler but the early ninja school antics and water village filler is done and these last couple of episodes have been PIFF

First there's the Kakashi episodes which is classic OG Nartuo

Now they've started to show mitsuki's backstory and what he's capable of.
We see the trio out on missions and it's getting real already. One of the first scenes is a person getting shanked through the chest, people getting caught slipping by genjutsus, and all sorts of other ninja related fukkery. The political motivation behind these tiny villages is much better too.

This series and My Hero Academia are about to carry shounen so hard in 2018

I feel like it's naruto first mission all over again. Low level mission that's really much higher. Somehow they will succeed and become closer afterwards . So far I liked the village in the mist arc more.

the problem with boruto is the slow progression. They don't want it catching up to the manga like naruto did so they are going to create a HUGE amount of content before they get to certain arcs. It doesn't help that manga it's self is also slow.
