'Boomerang' Reboot Among 3 Series Orders as BET Doubles Down on Scripted (Exclusive)

BET is doubling down on scripted programming.

Under orders from new network president Scott Mills, the Viacom-owned cable network has handed out straight-to-series orders for a half-hour comedic reboot of 1992 Eddie Murphy feature Boomerang; comedy Peachtree Place, produced by Girls Trip's Will Packer; and a drama, American Soul, inspired by the life of Soul Train mastermind Don Cornelius.

Just listened to a podcast talking about boomerang and based on that discussion, it could have a lot of life as a tv show because there are a lot of different dynamics the movie touches on directly and indirectly that are still relevant today:

A world composed purely of black executives
Office romance and proper workplace conduct
Strong women and working for said women
Sexual politics
Flipping of gender roles in relationships and generational differences in what’s cool, what’s not

Now the guy talking about the film does acknowledge its flaws. He’s good with admiring a thing and loving that thing while still being able to not use rose colored glasses. His thesis tho is just because a piece of art is flawed doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be admired or shouldn’t be held up as a great work of art

that lead going have to show and prove. Eddie Murphy is one of a kind

hell, the supporting characters are probably irreplaceable to lol
Odd thing is, this is the one movie where Eddie was getting outshined by the whole damn cast. I don't know if he was trying to be too smooth and low key or if he was going through something in his personal life. But when Halle Berry is stealing scenes from you, And I really like the movie, I didn't like him in it.

What you didnt like I think was his attempt at range, watched it last year after however so many years and it dawned on me he wasnt really doing his eddie murphy schtick. Even his signature laugh gets mentioned as being peculiar. He was trying to play the role straight. He was also a bit of a heel too which was a big departure from his other roles so all in all it was a different eddie

But when he was playing it straight in Harlem Nights, he done a better job, and he was in there with some heavy hitters. He had more emotion, was bland in Boomerang, I wasn't rooting for him. Especially the taxi scene where Robin Givens dumps him, I'm watching him like :hhh: kick a trash can or something.

@JahBuhLun i'm going to have to watch the movie with your thoughts on my mind

never thought Halle out acted Eddie :russ: the thought of it :picard: lol

maybe a case for Robin Givens or Eartha Kitt but I think because their characters were written as his match, and Eddie being a team player is letting them have the scenes, and his character is being reactive to them. But its still EDDIE MURPHY and when he is on screen he is most likely who gets your attention. I know you said you liked the movie but no Eddie, but I would say that I liked both

Watch the movie and pay close attention to Halle's transformation throughout the movie, it's almost fair to say that it was some of her best acting. Her reactions were real and normal, and I don't think Halle Berry can act her way out of a wet paper bag.

As far as Eddie; everybody was stealing the scene from him; like you said, he might have done that on purpose, but I didn't enjoy watching him getting outshined by:
Lela Rochan
Tisha Campbell
Martin
David Allen Grier
Chris Rock
Eartha Kitt
Halle Berry
Robin Givens
Grace Jones
John Witherspoon
The Bald Guy who made the commercial for Grace Jones
The Hotep Kids at the youth center

I swear to god he must've been going through some shyt..I've never seen him be that wack in a movie, and I watched Norbit a few times....
