Get that money John...

“It’s sort of surreal,” Collins said of his Hawks career leading to that moment. “When I hit that shot, I was so locked in, I wasn’t even really celebrating, I was so locked in on the moment, on us securing this win tonight and securing my first playoff berth. Just thinking about all the trials and tribulations I’ve gone through up until this point makes every bit of this that much sweeter.”

Question bruhs, who can the Hawks REALISTICALLY target to put them over the hump as far as title contenders? I know this is a tough question being we haven't seen how this team performs in the playoffs yet but I still think this is a good topic for discussion. Looking at the current lineup...

Cap
Collins
Hunter
Bogi
Trae

I think it's safe to say most people will look to upgrade Collins. My concern here is what player out there is actually available that we would be able to slot into the 4 spot and play the role we need them to?

The reason I say this is any player that play's the 4 from us would essentially HAVE to be a knock-down shooter with Trae, Bogi, and Hunter handling the rock probably 90-95% of the time and then we have Capela as the primary PnR person/rebounder. Collins currently shoot 40% from 3 so that's a MUST for any replacement IMO.

The next position people would likely look at is the SG position but Bogi is damn near the perfect SG playing next to Trae. He can handle, make plays for others, score from every level, has terrific size for a SG, and have shown he can take on tough defensive assignments when needed. The numbers Bogi putting up on this type of efficiency (combined with defensive prowess) won't be easy to replace IMO unless you slotting in someone like Klay Thompson...

So my question is, who are the realistic targets out there that can push the Hawks over the hump? We all know KD, Giannis, Bam (not a good target anyway IMO because he can't shoot consistently), Harden, AD, etc. etc. isn't coming through that door anytime soon so who would be available to push these dudes to another level?

Bogi playing the way he has leads me to think there's more of a chance Collins stays. Him being an active playmaking SG that plays well off Trae lessens the need for a playmaking forward, which in turn lessens the need to "play small", usually putting John at the C spot where he's significantly worse IMO.

OO is the x-factor in all this. They have to believe he can be a defensive anchor that makes it unnecessary to ever play John at the 5 to make him worth his deal. Thing is, if they think OO can develop into a 5/4 that could play alongside Capela as a playmaker, then that might be worth more to the system than John is now.

Either way, Bogi has definitely changed the course of this roster.

As far as us being contenders, we just need another offseason close to this past one. We upgraded Len/Brehmbry/Vince to Capela/Bogi/Gallo around our core and look at the difference.

We doing something like upgrading from(quick FA search):

Snell -> Josh Richardson
Hill -> JaMychal Green
Lou -> TJ McConnell

Along with Trae solidifying himself, DeAndre taking that leap, Bogi and Clint staying themselves, and the young guys(Cam, OO, BG) showing improvement, I would say that's a top 3 non-"superteam" roster in the league. Depending on how you feel about all the superteams being one year older, we could be legit top 5 overall.

Kawhi could opt out

But other than that that list isn’t that appealing

If we’re thinking about how the team gets better to me it’s through the draft or trade. We’ve never had a super star sign here or want to sign here so it’s more than likely going to come from the continued development of our core group. I think Trae is still ascending and can get better to an All NBA level. I think Bogi could be a 20-22 a night guy based on his recent performance. Hunter has All Star potential. Huerter’s a solid backup (which I always felt like was the best role for him). Cap’s a DPOY level talent. I’m torn on Collins because he’s the 4th best player on the team...maybe 5th (Trae, Cap, Hunter, Bogi maybe) but he’s an energy guy and the team mostly rocks with him but to me I think he’s maxed out on what he can be. 15-17 a night, 8-9 boards, a couple nice dunks. That’s not max level but if the Hawks feel he’s worth that then you have to hope he gets better which at his peak I think he’s a fringe All Star candidate

If everyone continues to improve I can see us as a 2-3 seed under Nate and a consistent 2nd round/ECF level contender. Still feel like we’re a piece or two away from a title tho

I think we are in a spot, youth wise, where the biggest jump we are going to make is from internal growth. Several of our key guys are young.

I think we are where the warriors were when they pushed the spurs in the first round when mark Jackson was their coach. They came back the following year with the best record ( along with our hawks). They didn't add anyone significant, just maturation and a better offensive system.

We will be better defensively next year just off the fact cam and hunter will be healthy and that's even if they don't improve. Onyeka with more size solidifies the backup 5 spot.

We will have to replace snell with another cheap knockdown shooter. Maybe a backup pg. If I recall correctly, warriors went from jarrett jack to Barbosa at backup pg.

I would target a knockdown shooter big whether that's the draft or free agency to eventually replace gallo when his contract expires

The 2022 & 2024 free agent list from that site looks promising.

I’m all in for keeping Collins now. I’d like to see these guys grow together and form a championship contending team
