That IBM I bought a couple weeks back popped nice off earnings. An unexpected surprise since I only wanted it for the dividend :skip:

Its sucks starting investing in your 30s but I figure better late than never. I've only been at this a few weeks but the ups and down of it are ridiculous.

I guess I've been somewhat investing since my late 20s with my 401K but I'm more talking personal investing now instead of retirement investing.

I didn't get started until my early 30's. I'm 41 now.

I'm looking back at all the time I wasted. I wish I knew what a Roth IRA was when I was 18. My parents didn't teach me about that but they told me to take the 401K. I got my first job at 16 and did the 401K thing but I was working retail and wasn't making much. After I quit that job my 401K only had about $8K in it so I cashed it out instead of rolling it over. I just took the penalties and bought a cheap used car (that only lasted me a year) and blew the rest. When I got my current job I started all over again and I haven't done anything stupid. At times I was contributing 9-11% to my 401K. I lowered that down to 6% that's matched and I'll put the rest in a Roth or my individual investment account.

I see so many stocks I wanna but but I dumped most of my money into FXAIX so I can't.

My parents know anything about personal finances. As long as I wasn't dead or in jail then I was "doing good".

I had a TSP (government 401K) since I was 19 but I was only a file clerk and lower level jobs through my 20's. Didn't go to school until I was 30 and found a career in Government Accounting.

If I had started earlier I'd be sitting pretty right now. I try to tell my nieces and nephews about all the opportunities I missed.
