Fellow Canadian here. Maybe someone can help me with this.
I understand the whole point of what the white man tried to do and accomplished with the natives - removing their culture, etc
what I don’t understand is how was it the sexual assault against children was all over the whole country in residential schools? In a regular public school every now and then you’ll hear about it once or twice. But I’m the residential school system the sexual assaults of children goes hand in hand whenever you hear the words “residential school”
what im trying to know is why was it rampant throughout the whole residential school system? There’s hundreds if not thousands of survivors who always talk about sexual abuse during their time there
There's a LOT more sexual abuse in other settings that you don't hear about. Certain settings make easy targets for the media, but public schools also have a sexual abuse epidemic. Private schools have a sexual abuse epidemic. Swimming orgs, gymnastics orgs, boy scouts, medical professionals, I've literally never heard of any large organizational structure involving kids and adults where there was not sexual abuse going on in the 20th century that got some degree of cover-up.
I think the basic issue is that 1% of any group of adults is scumbags, and nearly all major organizations are self-protective and don't want everyone else to know about their scumbags.
i think power imbalances attract predators. then add racism, you get fetishization mixed with predation.
But this is also true. Scumbags feel empowered by power imbalances. The more marginalized the kids are, and the more powerful the adults are, the more free the scumbags will be to commit their abuses. Wherever you see the most marginalized kids and the most powerful adults is where you'll see the greatest abuse.
