are we still at a point where these trains can't drive themselves yet? I'm sure there is a software that can control the whole grid and calculate the right speeds necessary, you can still have an engineer on hand to override any possible malfunctions or to override when necessary
They already have this on the L line in the NYC Subway... but that's the subway and Metro North is a railroad. I don't think they will even attempt to install that on any railroad line in the near future.

Also the subway systems in DC and Bay Area use the method you're describing.

seems like a worthy investment to me if it can eliminate human error drastically

The unions would never, ever allow that to happen. The MTA operates as if its still the 1970's and they love it.

Unions can be terrible when it comes to tech innovations and whats best for the consumer

At some point when things grow to become more efficient it can actually create jobs in other sectors by making them more profitable due to tech efficiency's

The Metro North still has ticket takers as if its the 80's. It's a horribly run organization- but they can do whatever they want....including kill people now apparently.

:dwillhuh:

All commuter railroads in North America still has ticket takers.

I take it you want Metro North to have a fare system like the DC Metro? Which has distance based fares but yet has turnstyles like the subway.

Of course they do. Railroads are allowed to operate like its still 30 years ago. Innovation isn't allowed. Sly posed the question why arent computers driving trains now....that's an easy answer.
