This is actually the first song in history to go #1 with rapping on it. And it's by a white woman.
Salute to Blondie though. She played a huge role in helping spread interest and intrigue into this culture we all ended up falling in love with. Peep some of her interviews she's done over the years about being introduced to the burgeoning subcultures of NYC around this era. She had a genuine respect for hip-hop as an outsider and wasn't just trying to make a cash grab hopping on a new trend unlike some others......(*cough* Sylvia Robinson *cough*)

Blondie was an artist and Robinson was a suit, at the time. Business person's interest is to make money. The music industry is structured for execs to spot trends early and figure out how to cash in. Robinson was one of the first to spot the commercial potential of the artform, and were it not for that....,,rapping might have played out and never become what it became.
Rapping has been around In many forms around the world for around 100 years. It was always going to stick at some point.

Actually it was the first song to (feature) rap vocals but the first rap to top ten chart topping song hit was rappers delight 1980, .
The Breaks by Kurtis Blow 1980 reach 80th on charts. There other local hit songs but billboard chart wise,these two I found.
