Godzilla underperforming :jawalrus:

Dark Phoenix flopping :ohlawd:

MIB straight up bombing :myman:

Dumbo a massive failure :smugdraper:

The first signs that the blockbuster system is about to collapse :banderas:

fukk this cookie cutter bullshyt movies studios keep pumping out, let's get back to the days when movies were actually creative and gritty. :blessed:

Marvel remain undefeated though :wow:

I really don't think using these movies performance is a good way to gauge whether there is blockbuster fatigue and the bubble is about to burst because none of these films arrived without built-in challenges to overcome.

Godzilla: King of Monsters had to deal with the fact that, despite a huge opening weekend, the previous movie got horrible word-of-mouth because of how shytty the script was and that Godzilla only appeared in like 10 minutes of the over 2 hour movie. People inclined to see a Godzilla movie would be like: "fukk that bullshyt...I don't want to watch a bunch of boring white people running around having relationship issues while I wait for Godzilla to make a cameo". So they probably lost a grip of potential audience who were turned off by the previous movie.

Dark Phoenix had a shytload of bad press, was following a disappointing movie in Apocalypse and the more diehard nerd fanbase know that the X-Men were now part of Disney/MCU and this movie really didn't matter. Plus it looked like ass in all of the trailers.

Dumb was directed by Tim Burton who has somehow become an albatross on every movie he directs. Dude hasn't had a legit hit since Alice in Wonderland back in 2010.

MIB: International is trying to kickstart the Men in Black franchise without Will Smith...that made it not be a guarantee to be a major hit right there. Let's be real, Chri Hemsworth isn't a box office draw unless he's playing Thor and Tessa Thompson isn't a box office draw period.
Besides the studio wasn't even projecting it to have a crazy opening because they anticipated it getting $26 million and it got $28 million so it overperformed if anything.

Who the hell was looking for a Shaft movie in 2019?

When a MCU movie, a Star Wars movie, a Batman movie, a Fast & The Furious movie and a Jurassic Park come out in the same year and all make around $25 million their opening weekends you will have a legitimate reason to make this thread. These movie though? Nah, chief.

Maybe. Gotta let it play out. Tracking behind last yr at this point isn't the worst.
Just saying. I don't have the exact #s in front of me. And don't forget all those articles last year about theater attendance being at its lowest since the early 90s. If people only show up for blockbusters and those are starting to flop the future looks bleak

Just putting this out there...if you think Shazam! was a flop then you also think Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse was a flop since both of those movies had similar "budget compared to profit" numbers.

Yeah both did perfectly fine at the box office and the good word of mouth should bode well for their sequels. Shazam! made around what the first Cap made etc..

Those mid tier budget films that make some money aren't the issue really.. it's the huge tentpole $160M+ movies that nobody asked for that just die first week like Men in Black International that are the problem. Nobody asked for that.

But there's bright spots like the horror genre which had a big resurgence and they profiting like crazy because the movies don't cost much at all to make.
