When Puff became Diddy, he made the attempt to leave the negative energy associated with "Puff Daddy" behind. It's both symbolic and and spiritual. In the black community there's a push to abstain from symbology at the time which is a mistake. If symbolism was useless the group kicking our ass currently wouldn't use it.

Claiming our own identity is step one toward economic and judicial freedom.

Firstly what it does is enable us to know who's on our team. You can't compete in a game if you don't know who your team mates are! Right now we're all lumped under African American, we have c00ns, sambos, bootlicks, wenches, bucks, etc., in our midst.
