Trump is not doing anything that hasn't been done before by other populist demogogues. He is right though. There were too many people who are way too cultured to the point that is blinded them what people really listen to. Even me. It's easy to forget that a lot of people are all based in emotions and don't care about policies and shyt.
Remember George Bush and the "I want to have a beer with him" dynamic. Democrats have forgotten that. They are thinking too highly of voters. Most voters couldn't articulate their political beliefs beyond simple talking points or slogans and that is still secondary to how someone makes them "feel" which is harder to quantify. This is the case to such a point, there have been plenty of reports where they would interview people about policies and when given kamala and Trump policies they overwhelmingly preferred kamala but they still will say Im voting/voted for Trump. I need to find this article I saw that showed this.
It's not policies that attract people. It's personality.
I agree with your premise, but just know it can also work in reverse as a negative for Democrats
Perfect example as the Reagan Era and how his economic policies known as Supply Side Economics were mostly universally hated. 4 years later Bill Clinton was elected and enacted the same exact policies. On top of it he was known as a "Right Leaning Democrat". But he had the personality and household name appeal to deliver his message, and people fell in love with him despite him mirroring Reagan's policies
But like you said, as long as that certain candidate is on the same political party that person votes for and us charismatic, they will accept anything
