BLACK PANTHER
The Black Panther (real name T'Challa) is a Marvel Comics superhero and member of the Avengers. Black Panther is the first Black costumed superhero in mainstream comics, predating the Falcon (the first *African-American* superhero), John Stewart (Green Lantern), Black Lightning, Storm of the X-Men, and Luke Cage/Power Man by several years.
Black Panther's debut predates the official formation of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense by several months (Black Panther debuted in Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966, while the Black Panther Party formed in October of 1966). As such, the character's inspiration does not stem from the organization.
Hailing from the fictional African nation of Wakanda, the Black Panther is the title of the king and protector of Wakanda and the chieftain of the Wakandan Panther Cult. Therefore, Black Panther's costume is a symbol of office, more than it is a superhero costume. T'Challa inherited the title of Black Panther after his father was killed by the mercenary Ulysses Klaw, who invaded Wakanda in search of Vibranium, Wakanda's most treasured resource. Since T'Challa was a young child when his father was killed, his uncle S'Yan underwent the rite of passage to become Black Panther in his stead, and as a young man T'Challa defeated his uncle in a ritual challenge for the title.
Black Panther is a seriously adept hand-to-hand combatant, having defeated Captain America in battle several times and was able to match Iron Fist in battle. He is also a scientist and inventor, having upgraded his Panther costume with advanced technology, and is one of the top 5 smartest humans on Earth. He is also tremendously wealthy, with the value of Wakandan Vibranium giving him a personal net worth of over 90.7 trillion dollars, making him one of the richest fictional characters of all time. He was also married for a time to Storm of the X-Men.
