Ralph Lauren is in the hotseat with members of Black fraternities and sororities after a link started circulating to their online store featuring a pair of chinos being sold with the greek letters Phi Beta Sigma on them.

The chinos, which are being sold for 299.99€ on Ralph Lauren’s french site, feature multiple symbols and designs and the Phi Beta Sigma letters are located on the back of the knee in red and black.

Members of the Black fraternity and sorority community have taken to social media to express their feelings about this, the majority of said feelings being negative.

“We are a week away from 106th anniversary of the founding of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and what is plastered all over Social Media? An ad for Polo Ralph Lauren Chino Graphique Droit with the letters that represents Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Greek Letters on the back crease of said pants!” a petition that was created on change.org demanding Ralph Lauren to remove the logo states.

299.99 euro currently converts to 335.77 dollars.

Update: Within three hours of this article being published, a Ralph Lauren spokesperson reached out to Watch The Yard and gave us an exclusive statement about the pants. Click here to read it.

Exclusive: Ralph Lauren Issues Statement to Watch The Yard Regarding their Phi Beta Sigma Pants
ralph-lauren-phi-beta-sigma-2.jpg

Earlier today we published a story about pants which are being sold for 299.99€ on Ralph Lauren’s French site with Phi Beta Sigma printed on them.

The chinos feature multiple symbols and designs and to much of our readers’ disappointment, have the Phi Beta Sigma letters printed on back of the knee in red and black.

Within three hours of us reporting on the story, an official Ralph Lauren spokesperson reached out to Watch The Yard and gave us this exclusive statement:

“The use of these symbols on our products was an oversight for which we deeply apologize. We are immediately taking action to remove the product from our sales channels. While we have a rigorous review process in place for all of our designs, this has prompted us to take another review of our protocols to help ensure that this does not happen again.

As an American brand with more than 50 years of heritage, Ralph Lauren is inspired by many facets of American culture. As part of this, we are firmly committed to respectful and appropriate use of all cultural icons and insignias.”

They followed up by stating in their email to Watch The Yard that “the chinos will be removed from all sales channels” and that they have reached out to the fraternity.

I am not a greek boy at all but I know those letters are trademarked. I can't believe they didn't get permission.

I always thought that frats were literally just using letters straight from the Greek alphabet. Like if I took 3 letters from the English alphabet and named my own frat. Let’s say GPG or whatever. I could trademark the letters GPG?

YOU CAN TRADEMARK THE LIKENESS OF THE LOGO. NOT REALLY THE LETTERS THEMSELVES.

THOSE PANTS WERE OBVIOUSLY AIMING FOR A COLLEGIATE STYLE.

Yes and no.
like I said I'm not a greek boy so I don't agree with this but Those greek letters are trademarked.
Do you remember Lids(is it still around) Lids used to have a whole greek lettering section where you could put greek letters on the hat but the option was removed. It was because those letters are trademarked. not the letters individually but when you combine them in the same format and style as the fraternity you're infringing on their mark.
if you made GPG in an attractive and stylized way and had it stand for something you could trademark it.
yeah, they are using letters straight from the greek alphabet that what makes it so stupid.

They should have waited until they sold a ton of pants and then cashed out.
