I kinda understand where the kid was. When you call a child "black" we think of the literal color black. She is, in fact, a brown shade.

The kid doesn't quite understand the bullshyt that adults have concocted to divide each other, so she only understands the literal, not the subliminal.

She understands more than just the literal Black color doesn't match my skin

We crawled into my bed and I held her hand as I spoke. She asked "Mami, you wished this color for me when I was in your belly, right? Because it's like Titi Q's and because it's like your coffee." She said this with satisfaction and finality as a simple explanation for her hue and I smiled.

She is asking for validation... She is asking if Black is wanted
