Yeah, the ignorance and self hate in the North NJ hoods was real. But I went to school near the projects so maybe that was a part of it. People saying:
"I gotta stay in the shade cause I don't wanna get black"
"African booty-scratcher"
"You got bead-a-bees/peas in ya hair"
"I need a perm cause my Africa is showing"
Just straight ignorance, but another thing is that everyone snapped on eachother. Everyone got clowned and you either had to clap back, fight or take it. If you wasn't getting clowned about your hair, it was your, skin, nose, clothes, shoes, your mama, your house got roaches, etc.
I had locs since I was 6 and people would ask was I born like that, can I wash my hair, was I jamaican? I remember when I cut off my locs in high school (senior year) and rocked a fro my best friend was surprised at my hair texture. She didn't know her hair could do the same thing.
