I couldn't put this shyt down today. 5 chapters in and I discovered new shyt that I had never known. I first heard of KMD on YO MTV raps when I saw the Gasface video back in the day. Their debut is dope, but I wasn't really feeling all of the songs like that(though I did buy an original pressing around 2002).

  1. I had no idea that Cage and Subroc were like best friends and Cage was the last person to see him alive.
  2. Prime Minister Pete nice played college ball in the 80s haha. wtf!!!
  3. Khalil Kain(Raheem in Juice) and pops(from Last Poets) were friends with Subroc and Doom.
  4. Doom had another brother and sister.
  5. Doom and 2pac were friends on the road when they were touring and trying to get on (2pac with DU and KMD with 3rd Bass)I saw pictures of them together online, but didn't think they were that close.
  6. They got a $250k budget for their debut Mr. Hood
  7. Mr. Hood was a neighborhood friend of theirs and that's him on the cover in the hoodie.
  8. KMD were strict Muslims until being on the road got the best of them and they started drinking/doing drugs. Subroc started doing the harder drugs like acid with Cage.
  9. Serch and Pete's beef was so petty even back then, that Serch was asked to leave Subroc's wake
I assume some of this stuff is on wikipedia/google, but I never cared to google much of it. It's just so much to unpack about a guy that lived a very private life. It's crazy that Doom was cool with all of these guys like 2pac, Brand Nubian, Busta and LONS, etc and once they blew up in the 90s after Black b*stards was shelved, they never reached out to him. That's crazy.

most I ever heard about DOOM's life (including most of that up there) was through

Dante Ross is mentioned a lot in the book too. I read his autobiography earlier this year and that was before his war of words with Pete Rock on instagram. Some things from Ross book overlap this one.

Ok, I finally made it to Chapter 17 today. i didn't want to skip over everything and read that one, but I've been anticipating it. That's the chapter about Madvillainy. Apparently Doom didn't know who Madlib was before he started working with him and the album started with Doom just doing 3 tracks for $1500(shyt, had I known that back then, I would have gave him $500 for a song). So much information. Yall got to pick this shyt up. There is an audiobook of it too, but I like to sometimes skip around a book to find things I want to see. I remember over 20 years ago Madlib's recording setup being on he Stonesthrow site and talking about it on forums back then.
