Doobie - There's a note in every other bar that just sounds dissonant to me. Like it's not in the right key. Which is weird because this is sampled. Going back and listening to it the 2nd time, it's not quite as bothersome. The drums and mixing and everything are dope but aside from the part that sounds odd to me, the only other criticism i really have is that it could use some more variety. I'm also iffy on the sped up vocals...they sound a bit cheesy to me.
Rod - The bass is dope but maybe you could dial it back just a little bit. Drums are dope, but I'm not a fan of the synth sound you chose. The melody is straight, but the sound is just kind of cheesy and weak. I also hate the little brass sound that comes in, it sounds out of key and weird all around.
It's hard to really choose between the two. Rod incorporated a bit more variety with his switch-ups and I prefer his drum and bass - but man that trumpet/sax sounding thing just bugs the shyt out of me.
Overall, I have to judge this based on which beat I'd be more inclined to use on an album. If it weren't for that damn sound, I think I'd be leaning towards Rod, because I really like the hard bass and everything...but the sax sound just really feels out of place in terms of cadence and out of key to top it off.
So my vote goes to Doobie Doo. Props to both
